A PROJECT to revamp Cosgrove High School’s canteen has also given the school’s students an introduction to college life.

With the support of the University of Tasmania’s Business and Economics School, a team of Cosgrove High and Elizabeth College students worked together to plan, market and deliver an improved canteen for Cosgrove High.

The students repainted part of the canteen to add some colour, and surveyed students about what sort of food they would like to see on the canteen menu and how much they would be prepared to pay for certain items.

The students decided it was important to add more vegetarian and healthy options to the menu, display the kilojoule amount of menu items and increase the range of snacks and drinks available. They also have plans to add outdoor seating to the canteen.

Elizabeth College business studies student Anna Vout said the project reinforced what she had been learning in the classroom, but it had also been a great networking opportunity.

Anna plans to study at UTAS from next year and she said meeting some of the lecturers had been a great introduction.

“I’d also like to hope that the networking with the Cosgrove students was a good way to transition them into college,” she said.

Cosgrove student Zackery Stanton Triffett said while he already had plans to go to Elizabeth College from next year, the project had given him a greater understanding of college life.

“Seeing those kids and their ideas and the way they think, it made me feel like that school will improve the way I think about things,” he said.

The project was part of a broader program delivered by UTAS at Elizabeth College.
