Call to buy back and ban Adler A110 eight-shot shotgun
GUN Control Australia is calling for a buyback of up to 7000 Adler shotguns that have already entered Australia and to have the eight-shot weapon banned.
GUN Control Australia is calling on state and territory police ministers to buy back up to 7000 Adler shotguns that have already entered Australia and to ban the eight-shot weapon.
Spokesman Roland Browne said the Adler A110 rapid-fire, lever-action shotgun should be moved from category A to category D, effectively banning it.
GCA also wants the existing six-shot model to be moved from category A to category C.
“We would like Ministers to buyback all Adlers that have already entered Australia unless the owner has a category C or D licence,” Mr Browne said.
“We believe all jurisdictions should ban the modification of firearm magazines [which allow a six-shot magazine to able to shoot up to 11 shots].”
The Adler A110 has been at the centre of a political firestorm after Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm revealed that the Federal Government had been willing to trade a relaxation of a sunset clause for his vote on a Migration (Biometrics) Bill in 2015.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and former prime minister Tony Abbott have differed over what Mr Abbott knew of the negotiations with Senator Leyonhjelm.
The Tasmanian Government has refused to say what position it will take to today’s meeting in Melbourne.
Tasmania is an important stakeholder in the national firearms agreement, which was struck after the Port Arthur massacre on April 28, 1996 under the guidance of then PM John Howard.
Mr Browne said one decision on the Adler A110 could undo 20 years of good work.
“David Leyonhjelm, the National Party and the Liberal Party are holding the country over a barrel – a big barrel that can rapidly fire over 11 shots in 11 seconds,” he said.
“This one decision could ruin twenty years of a good decision. Twenty years of no gun massacre and a dramatic reduction in gun deaths here in Australia.”
