A TRICKLE eventually swelled to a surge today as revellers made the slower-than-usual trip to Glenorchy for the opening day of the Royal Hobart Show.

People began filing into the Elwick showgrounds shortly after the gates opened at 9am, with many delayed by the traffic chaos experienced across Greater Hobart earlier today.

Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania chief executive Scott Gadd said roadworks in Howard Rd also impeded progress.

He was, however, pleased by the blue skies overhead despite the forecast of possible showers.

“We have a good number of school children coming in and taking advantage of Farmers’ Day,” he said.

“The weather is holding off and allowing people to take advantage of what’s on offer.”

Natalie Downton took the chance to introduce her three-year-old son Archie to the menagerie in the Mercury Animal Nursery.

“We are going through all the show,” she said. “It’s good fun.”

The Dinosaur Petting Zoo is also expected to prove particularly popular with young showgoers.

At the other end of the spectrum, discounted show entry is being offered today for aged care groups.

EDITORIAL: READY FOR THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW

Judging has started for poultry, caged birds and dairy goats, cattle breeds and sheep.

Over in the kennel section, it’s a busy day of judging for more than a dozen breeds from British bulldogs to Japanese spitz.

This afternoon there will be livestock sales, with cattle beginning at 1.30pm and progressing through to lambs and pigs.

The rollerblade derby demonstrations, which are new to the show, also start today.

Wednesday’s action will be capped off with the Bulls and Barrows Rodeo from 6pm and the Frocks ’n’ Flannies Ball, kicking off at 7pm.
