A South Australian man came home to a frightening experience when he saw an armed man climbing out the back window of his house.

The man returned to his Euston Terrace home in the Adelaide suburb West Croydon just before 1pm on Friday, but as he walked into the backyard he saw the man leaving the property.

But as the man went to confront the intruder, he pulled out a large machete and threatened the homeowner.

The suspect then ran off through the back fence.

Nothing appeared to have been stolen from the property, and the homeowner wasn't injured, according to SA Police.

A search throughout the Croydon and West Croydon area is now under way for the armed intruder.

Cordons were set up and a police dog was called in to search nearby homes, but the man has not yet been found.

The suspect is described as having dark hair with a goatee beard and was wearing a grey jumper and dark coloured shorts.

Anyone with information on the wanted man is asked to contact the police assistance line on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
