An Adelaide family has escaped uninjured after a homemade bomb, placed outside their home, exploded on Tuesday night.

Just after midnight, police were alerted to the incident on Bauhinia Drive where crime scene investigators later examined the area and remaining fragments of the device.

The explosion caused the front window of the Parafield Gardens home to shatter, but the six occupants were not injured.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion but believe it was not a random attack.

Anyone with information or who saw or heard suspicious activity is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go online.
