The 13-year-old boy who went missing in a South Australian national park has been found “safe and well” as is back in his mother arms.

The alarm was raised for Logan Good at about 6.30pm on Wednesday at Mount Remarkable National Park, located in the state’s Mid North region.

The young teen, who is travelling with a group of people on holiday from NSW, wandered off from the Alligator Gorge carpark and did not return.

Police officers, CFS and SES personnel conducted an extensive search into the early hours of Thursday but Logan was not found.

The search resumed again later on Thursday morning and the boy was found later in the afternoon seeking shelter.

SA Police said Logan knocked on the door of a remote National Parks cabin at about 1.15pm and was returned to his waiting family.

Earlier on Thursday, Logan’s mother Hayley told reporters at the scene he walked a little way ahead of the group as they were heading back to the car park last night.

She praised the efforts of emergency services trying to find her son.

Craig Nixon from the National Parks and Wildlife Service said Alligator Gorge was a “rough and rugged” area that involved some rock hoping.

“You have to walk down into the gorge from a carpark. There are one hundred-odd steps down into the gorge and the surface of the trail is natural so it follows a creek bed,” he told ABC Radio.

“Because it follows the creek bed, the trail changes every time there’s a flood and because we’ve had some good rains this year, the trail has probably changed a little bit.

“It is well sign-posted but there are a number of kangaroo pads that come onto the trail too … so if you're not paying attention, it’s possible to get sidetracked to what you think is the main trail.”

Mr Nixon said there were also about six National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers that assisted police with the search.
