Man dies in third workplace fatality in SA, Victoria this week

A man has reportedly been crushed to death in the third workplace fatality in South Australia and Victoria this week.

A man has tragically been crushed to death in the second workplace fatality in Adelaide this week.

Emergency services were called to a workshop on Barker Road, Waterloo Corner in the city’s north about 8.15am on Wednesday.

Police said the 35-year-old Woodville North man died at the scene after being crushed by machinery.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner, with SafeWork SA also investigating the incident.

It comes just 48 hours after a 53-year-old grandfather was hit and killed by a truck at the Ingham’s chicken processing plant in nearby Burton on Monday.

Robert Langella, of Munno Para West, died at the Burton Road poultry processing facility about 8.30am despite desperate efforts from colleagues and paramedics to save him.

His daughter Kayla said her dad was just at work doing what he did every day when he “was taken away from us with a blink of an eye”.

“There is so much more life you deserved to live, I love you so much dad forever and ever,” she said in an emotional tribute on Facebook.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Langella’s death, and they would prepare a report for the coroner.

SafeWork SA is also investigating.

A worker in Victoria also died on Monday after being struck by an overhead boom at a construction site in Melbourne’s west.

The 40-year-old man was working alone operating a concrete pump and boom in St Albans when the boom collapsed.

WorkSafe is investigating the incident.

His death brings the workplace fatality toll in Victoria to 16 for 2021.
