A man has died hitting a tree after performing a burnout in front of cops and speeding off on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

A driver has died in South Australia after doing a burnout in front of police, speeding off and crashing into a tree.

The man’s Commodore sedan was spotted on Williss Drive at Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula on Monday afternoon.

Checks revealed the car was unregistered and patrol officers activated their lights but the driver didn’t stop and was chased to a nearby road where he performed a burnout.

He sped off with members of the public spotting the car headed towards Williss Drive again.

A short time later the vehicle crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The identity of the driver has not been established and major crash officers are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

An internal investigation will also be conducted.
