Fireys, cops called in after Extinction Rebellion protesters glue themselves to Adelaide mall awning

Climate activists have staged a defiant act outside a popular mall in Adelaide, with police and firefighters being called in to disperse a large protest.

A section of Adelaide’s busiest mall was brought to a standstill as climate activists glued themselves to the awning of the plaza to protest the government’s “woeful” actions to curtail the fossil fuel industry.

Firefighters were called to remove two Extinction Rebellion protesters from the Rundle Mall plaza after they scaled the awning on Saturday morning.

Part of Rundle Mall was closed off as a fire truck and police swarmed the area just after 11am.

Two protesters were unglued from the roof.

The well-known climate protest group announced they were highlighting the lack of action from the federal government to combat Australia’s “climate and ecological crisis”.

“It‘s almost 100 days since the election,” the group posted on Twitter.

“Today’s protest is highlighting the woeful lack of action from the Labor govt (sic) to curtail the fossil fuel industry.”

Protesters can be seen chanting outside the mall with megaphones and carrying signs reading “End Fossil Fuels Now”.

Two women aged 72 and 68 were arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour, mark graffiti and unlawfully be on premises, an SA Police spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire.

Another man, 47, was charged with fail to cease loiter and hindering police.

All three will face court at a later date.
