Live breaking news: 'Five-day vaccination blitz' as lockdown call looms

Authorities have announced a new plan to combat the latest coronavirus cluster as health officials answer to the recent aged care bungle.

Victoria announces aged care vaccination blitz

Welcome to Rush Hour, news.com.au's live breaking news blog.

The Victorian government has recorded nine new local cases and two international cases of Covid-19, bringing the state's active total to 63.

An official report from the Department of Health revealed 20,484 vaccine doses were administered, with 42,699 test results received in the past 24 hour period. The new development comes as experts float the reintroduction of the "ring of steel" checkpoint grid around Melbourne, allowing those less at risk in regional areas to escape lockdown.

Authorities have also announced a five-day vaccination "blitz", prioritising those working in vulnerable professions, including aged care, following recent backlash to poor vaccination rates among those working with the elderly.
