The Newman government’s re-election hopes have received a substantial boost with a large drop in the state’s unemployment level in the final jobs update before the state election in two weeks.

Unemployment in Queensland fell from 6.9 per cent in November to 6.1 per cent in December on a seasonally-adjusted basis.

The state previously had the highest level of unemployment in the nation, but is now on a par with other states and the overall national level.

The unemployment levels in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are higher than those in Queensland; only Western Australia and NSW are lower.

A quiet family man and restaurant manager was killed and dumped in muddy parkland last year in what is now believed to be a case of mistaken identity, in a crime that has links to the Ibrahim family.

Darren Galea, 34, was found under the Duck River Bridge in Auburn last year, shot in the head at close range and dumped with his hands bound.

According to Fairfax, the bullet that killed Mr Galea has been linked to two other shootings in Sydney. One was related to drug activity and the other, a Nomads bikie gang dispute.

“There is nothing in Mr Galea’s past to suggest any links with organised crime or drug activity, which is why we believe it could have been a case of mistaken identity,” Detective Inspector Mark Henney told Fairfax.

Pope Francis has condemned any killing in God’s name, but also insisted there were limits to freedom of speech and said there was one thing that would make him punch a man.

The Pope made the comments on Thursday in relation to the attack by Islamists on the offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris last week in which 12 people died

“You cannot provoke, you cannot insult other people’s faith, you cannot mock it,” the pontiff said.

Gesturing to a papal aide, Pope Francis said the man could expect consequences if he ever insulted Francis’s mother.

“If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,” Francis said while pretending to throw a punch in his direction.

The campaign to get Taylor Swift’s song Shake It Off on the Triple J Hottest 100 list continues to gain traction.

A change.org petition that appeared on Wednesday to stop Swift from appearing on the alternative music list has only managed to secure 27 supporters.

Unfortunately the Warmest 100, which has previously predicted which songs will be included in the Hottest 100, will not be continuing this year due to a change in the way people vote, making it harder for them to post their songs on social media.

But Sportsbet has the song on odds of 4.5 to be the Number 1 song, it is second to Peking Duk’s song High, which is currently the frontrunner on odds of 2 to 1.
