Almost 100 years since it disappeared, the Australian Navy is believed to have made a breakthrough in the search for a missing World War I submarine.
Considered the oldest mystery of naval history, the AE1 submarine was deployed and lost in September 1914.
Sky News is now reporting Navy sources say a ‘contact of interest’ has been located during a search of the area where it was lost near Papua New Guinea, but further investigation is required.

Two police officers have been hailed as heroes after escorting an out-of-control truck to safety at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway in Adelaide.
The officers were on a routine patrol on the freeway uptrack when they spotted the truck, with smoke coming from it, as it exited the Heysen Tunnels on Tuesday.
They made a U-turn, activated their lights and sirens, and alerted traffic management so that the
lights at the intersection were turned green to allow the truck, carrying a giant Caterpillar elevating scraper, to safely travel through the intersection at 70km/h while under police escort.

ASIO chief David Irvine has revealed security authorities are “actively considering” raising Australia’s terrorism threat level from “medium” to “high”.
The “medium” threat rating means a terrorist attack could occur in Australia and the “high” level is used when agencies believe an attack is likely.
The outgoing director-general told the ABC’s 7.30 Report he’s “actively considering” lifting the terror alert level to high in light of the situation in Syria and Iraq.

Acclaimed Tasmanian writer Richard Flanagan has been short-listed for the most important English language literature award, the Man Booker Prize.
Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North, is one of six novels to be short-listed for the coveted $90,000 prize, which will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Guildhall next month.

Police are desperate to speak to 44-year-old grain farmer Geoffrey Hunt after his wife and three children were shot dead on a farm in Lockhart in rural NSW.
Police found the bodies of Mr Hunt’s wife Kim Hunt, 41, and their son Fletcher, 10, and daughters Mia, 8 and Phoebe, 6 Tuesday afternoon on their Boree Creek Rd farm, 60km west of Wagga Wagga.

Senior colleagues of Julie Gillard at her former legal firm raised concerns that she had created a union slush fund that “might have been set up corruptly and might have involved corrupt moneys”.
Federal Court judge Bernard Murphy, who worked with the future Labor prime minister at Melbourne legal firm Slater & Gordon in the 1990s, recalled yesterday the concerns of the firm’s partners about a fund Ms Gillard had created for her then union boyfriend, Bruce Wilson.
He gave evidence to the royal commission into union corruption, where Ms Gillard is due to appear today.

Former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has left a Swiss hospital and will continue his treatment at home after a devastating ski accident in December, his family said in a statement.
He will be moved from a top-notch hospital in the Swiss city of Lausanne to his home in nearby Gland where he will continue his rehabilitation.
“There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead,” a spokeswoman for the family said, providing no further details on Schumacher’s health status.

The Byron Bay man who was stalked and killed by a 3m juvenile great white shark only 15m from the beach yesterday has been identified as former IT worker Paul Wilcox.
The 50-year-old had almost made it to Clarkes Beach when the shark attacked about 10.40am, as his wife of 24 years, Victoria, walked nearby on Main Beach.

Sydney’s taxi network has ground to a halt this morning.
Taxis Combined’s booking system has been down for the past few hours, and the problem is yet to be fixed.
Customers attempting to call through to book a cab have been unable to get though this morning, and the smartphone app, M Taxi, is also failing to update.

A preliminary report by the Dutch Safety Board has shed new light on the MH17 crash, finding the Boeing 777 broke into pieces mid-flight after being pierced by high speed objects.
According to the 34-page report, the doomed plane had diverted slightly from its flight path over eastern Ukraine and was unable to comply with a direction to climb higher.
Instead another Boeing 777 took the path of MH17 to avoid a separation conflict.

A news producer has been accused of making a secret video of his girlfriend having sex with him on Valentine’s Day and posting it on a porn website.
According to the New York Post, NBC News digital producer Carlo Dellaverson, hid a camera in the New York apartment he shared with is 29-year-old partner.
The 30-year-old had sex with her and kept the camera rolling, allegedly posting the video on XTube.
His girlfriend found the video on his computer months later and moved out.
Police have charged him with disseminating unlawful surveillance and harassment.
