Sea World Whale Watch claims first whales for the season off the Gold Coast
A WHALE of a story was to be had at the weekend when people got to see the first whales of season pass the Gold Coast.
THE first official sightings of whales on their annual migration north was made off the Gold Coast at the weekend.
Even though the official season has not yet started, the Sea World whale watching boat has been making daily trips and came up lucky on Saturday, and again yesterday.
On Saturday a mother and calf were found directly east of the Coast.
Sea World Whale Watch general manager David Robertson said the pair had taken time out from their journey to check out the boat and its passengers.
“It was very cute,” he said.
“They were travelling north but the baby stopped and saw our vessel.
“We sat next to it for half an hour.
“The baby was very fat.
“It was a very healthy mum and calf.
“They were friendly.
“We weren’t expecting it, or to see them so relaxed and friendly.”
Mr Robertson said sightings were expected to increase daily from now on.
“We’re out there looking every day and we hit the jackpot,” he said.
“They're pretty much right on time — like clockwork — the old whales.”
