RUGBY league legend Wally Lewis will lead the public rally to be held in Brisbane’s CBD to pay tribute to one-punch victim Cole Miller.

The event is for the 18-year-old promising water polo player who died in hospital on January 4 from massive brain trauma a day after allegedly being hit in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

About 3600 people have indicated on Facebook that they plan to attend a public rally at King George Square at 12.15pm on Monday in memory of Cole.

Lewis, who will MC the event, knows the Miller family through his daughter Jamie-Lee who also plays water polo.

“We’ve come to know each other well and have become extremely close over the years,” Lewis told the Courier-Mail.

“It’s the sort of tragedy that affects the family particularly but also affects everyone who has become so close with the family.”

The rally is taking place after another one-punch incident.

Mt Isa pub manager Melissa Abdoo suffered life-threatening injuries when she was knocked to the ground early on Saturday.

Cole’s older brother Billy, who represented Australia in water polo at the 2012 London Olympics, joined friends and family at a memorial service last week at the Fortitude Valley site where he was attacked.

A makeshift shrine to the teenager has been established there following his death.

Cole’s funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at the Cathedral of St Stephen in Brisbane’s CBD.

The two men accused of Cole’s death, Armstrong Renata and Daniel Maxwell, both 21, remain in custody, having been charged with unlawful striking causing death.
