Queensland man Terry Moloney finds four yolks in one of his chicken's eggs
AN 11 billion to one chance has given a Queensland girl an egg-citing dinner after her dad cracked open an egg that had a few more yolks than normal...
WHEN Terry Moloney found four yolks in one of his chicken's eggs, he thought he'd cracked.
The Tewantin local was cooking dinner for his family when he made the egg-citing discovery.
His wife Amanda said she heard her husband cry out in surprise – some might say crow in surprise – so she ran outside to see what the flapping was about.
“I went over and saw there were four yolks in the little egg ring on the barbeque,” Mrs Moloney said.
“We just thought it was amazing.”
The family has had chickens at their residential property for about two months now and the birds have only just started laying.
“We have had one or two double yolks, which is apparently rare but not super rare,” Mrs Moloney said.
“It was only when we looked into it and did some more research online that we realised just how rare it is.”
When it came to eating the four-in-one treat, it was the couple’s four-year-old daughter Mischa who proved she wasn’t yellow.
From all reports, she is said to have thoroughly enjoyed the protein treat, which is lucky because it is unlikely she ever have the chance to egg-perience it again.
While not unheard of, the chances of finding four yolks in one egg are said to be about 11 billion to one.
In fact, when reached for comment, Queensland United Egg Producers Queensland spokesman Geoff Sondergeld said he had never seen it in his 20-year career in the industry.
“You get double yolks more frequently, but certainly three or four I’ve never seen.
“Generally as the bird is coming into their ovulation cycle you’ll be more likely to see multiple yolks.
“But it’s as they get a bit older they’re more likely to lay double yolkers.”
