Qld election 2020: LNP denies claims leader Deb Frecklington reported to electoral watchdog, weeks out from state election

The Premier has demanded the Opposition Leader answers key questions following reports she had been referred to the election watchdog.

Deb Frecklington 'lied to her electorate' when seeking a seat in parliament

With just weeks to go until Queenslanders head to the polls, the state’s Opposition Leader is at the centre of a political crisis after reports her own party referred her to the state election watchdog.

The ABC reported Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington had been referred to the Electoral Commission of Queensland, over alleged concerns about a series of fundraising events that could have violated laws intended to curtail the political influence of property developers.

The LNP has insisted there no such complaint was made.

The ABC reported a number of attendees made donations totalling “almost $150,000” over a series of events, which could have violated laws introduced in 2018 to curb the risk of corruption around government decisions on development projects.

Ms Frecklington addressed the media on Tuesday morning, saying "I stand by my integrity".

She "absolutely" denied the party sought legal advice from the Electoral Commission of Queensland.

"Politicians attend supporters dinners, politicians mix with and go to events with every manner of business people," Ms Frecklington said.

But Premier said it was a "very serious issue", noting property developer donations are against the law.

"There needs to be a full explanation as to who she was meeting with and why she was meeting with them."

The Premier's lieutenant, Treasurer Cameron Dick, doubled down labelling the LNP leader "dysfunctional Deb".

"Deb Frecklington is a reckless leader," he said. "She is is leading a dysfunctional party, and it is exactly what Queensland doesn't need."

The live blog has ended for today but we'll be back tomorrow to bring you the latest from the campaign trail.

Updates

Unionists crash Morrison's LNP event

Union and pre-refugee protestors crashed a Liberal-National Party luncheon in Brisbane hosted by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state leader Deb Frecklington.

This comes after protestor mobbed the Prime Minister on Monday, throwing red paint on his car.

‘Only a fool’: Judge knocks back last-minute bid from Clive Palmer

Clive Palmer has failed in a last-ditch bid to delay facing court until after state borders open, as a lawsuit looms over his use of the Twisted Sister’s ‘80s classic “We’re Not Gonna Take It” in campaign ads.

The businessman and former politician is being sued by Universal Music, with a hearing due to start in seven days.

But the Federal Court heard on Monday he doesn’t want to give evidence over videoconferencing because he didn’t realise how much of the case was geared towards attacking his credibility.

A judge said in return that “only a fool” would have thought it wasn’t an issue.

Mr Palmer’s barrister Paddy Williams told the court his client “wishes to subject himself to the rigours of cross-examination in person” but the difficulties of travelling interstate in the COVID-19 pandemic mean that isn’t easy.

Palaszczuk commits $15 million to Ballymore

And back to election pledges.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has today revealed her government will invest $15 million to the redevelopment of Ballymore Stadium, transforming the iconic rugby venue into a new national headquarters for women’s Rugby and the Wallaroos.

“The rebirth of Rugby’s famous Ballymore precinct is an important part of Queensland’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan,” the Premier said.

“This project is ready to go now and that means more than 150 new jobs are being fast-tracked.

“In partnership with Queensland Rugby Union and the Federal Government, this new National Rugby Training Centre (NRTC) will be the new home for women’s Rugby in Australia.

“As well as the new home base for national Wallaroos women’s team, Ballymore will offer a new training base for the Queensland Reds men’s and women’s teams and the Australian Rugby Union Academy."

Morrison: Political parties need to comply with the law

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has addressed a number of issues including China, the Federal Budget and the NSW Premier's revelations of a relationship with a disgraced MP.

All he's said so far about the state election in Queensland is parties should "comply with the law" in regards to party donations.

This is, of course, topical given reports into the state's Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington allegedly accepting donations from property developers.

Updates on this to come

Deputy Premier Miles has his turn bashing Opposition

Deputy Premier Steven Miles is the latest Labor member to call on the Opposition to fully disclose who was in attendance at the party fundraiser which allegedly accepted donations from property developers.

"It is much much worse than murky," he said, demanding the Liberal-National Party release the full details from the event.

Palaszczuk heaps pressure on Frecklington

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk called on the Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington to address reports related to property developers attending an LNP fundraiser event.

"These are very serious issues," the Premier said. "These are matters the leader of the opposition needs to explain.

"There is a ban on property developer donations going to political parties.

"It is a very serious offence for people to be engaging with property developers and getting donations from them when it is against the law to do so.

"There needs to be a full explanation as to who she was meeting with and why she was meeting with them."

The Premier was asked about an event hosted on Saturday night by former Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd where thousands of dollars was donated to her party.

Ms Palaszczuk confirmed she was at this function at a private residence.

"There were no property developers present," she said.

Where's Albo?

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she doesn't need anyone to hold her hand when she was asked if her party's federal leader Anthony Albanese would be joining her on the campaign trail.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been in the Sunshine State since Sunday throwing his weight behind Liberal colleague Deb Frecklington in her bid to win the state election.

"I don't need anyone to hold my hand, I'm quite capable of travelling around the length and breadth of Queensland with my own team," the state Labor leader told reporters.

"If Anthony wants to come here, we're more than happy to have him."

Palaszczuk commits to 'return to glory days'

Queenslanders will soon be building Queensland-made trains, after a billion dollar announcement by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk from Maryborough this morning.

Ms Palaszczuk said she wanted to bring the regional hub "back to the days of being the heartland of manufacturing in Queensland."

More than 690 jobs will be created.

Labor will commit $600 million for 20 new trains to be built in Maryborough.

A $1 million investment for a business case to replace the state's three most iconic trains: The Spirit of the Outback, the Westlander, and the Outlander has also been announced.

Over 10 years, $300 million will be put in the pipeline to refurbish and maintain the existing QR fleet.

'Dysfunctional Deb': Treasurer blasts Opposition

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick has slammed Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington over the reports her own party referred her to the state election watchdog.

"Deb has very serious questions to answer," he told reporters.

"Deb Frecklington is a reckless leader.

"She is is leading dysfunctional party, and it is exactly what Queensland doesn't need.

"Deb Frecklington needs to answer questions about her party's donations and why her party is leaking against her."
