While Ms Palaszczuk was widely tipped to retain power, the extent to which Labor has upset the Opposition was pretty unexpected.

Key seats the LNP targeted, hoping to snatch from Labor in a bid to form government, have been comfortably held.

Deb Frecklington concedes defeat

As a defiant Annastacia Palaszczuk was speaking to supporters in Brisbane’s west, the Liberal-National Party leader was conceding defeat in the city.

Deb Frecklington began by congratulating Labor on their victory, saying that while she doesn’t agree with the Premier on much, she “respects her as an opponent and the leader of our state”.

“But most of all I respect the voters of Queensland, and we are so privileged to live in this democracy.

“Now, Queenslanders have made their decision, and I thank each and every one of them for voting and for upholding our democracy.

“This decision is respected by the Liberal National Party. And I am so proud of the campaign that we have fought.”

Ms Frecklington said Queensland needed a plan to recover from the economic disaster caused by the coronavirus pandemic – a plan Ms Palaszczuk doesn’t have, she said.

“Queensland still needs a plan. We're in the middle of an economic crisis and it is far from over.

“So for Queensland's sake, I urge the Premier, I urge the Premier, to taking action to grow our economy and to create jobs in this state.

“I urge the Premier to support our most important industries and I urge the Premier to support the regions.”

Ms Frecklington said she will continue as leader of the LNP in Queensland, to cheers and applause.

“Now, the LNP is going to continue to hold the Palaszczuk government to account.

“We will speak up for those who have been forgotten and left behind. We're going to fight for the families of this great state because families mean more than anything.”

Premier praises Queenslanders

A victorious Annastacia Palaszczuk is speaking to Labor Party faithful in her electorate of Inala, west of Brisbane, on a momentous evening.

Ms Palaszczuk began by thanking campaign volunteers, staff and executive members, but saved her biggest shout out for Queenslanders.

“It has not been an easy year for many, many people. For many Queenslanders, I know it has been an incredibly tough year.

“It has been tough not being able to see your family and friends in other states, or even around the world, as we've been in the midst of a global pandemic.

“But here in Queensland we've all stood strong and united, and together we are on top of the pandemic, and if we continue to work together, we will stay strong.”

To roaring cheers, the Premier declared: “Queensland is the best place on Earth and it is the best state in Australia!”

With a grin, Ms Palaszczuk instructed her Cabinet to “get back to work as soon as possible”.

“This has been a tough year and we've got to get people back into work. I give my commitment to the people of this state that my team will roll up our sleeves and we will get back to work as quickly as possible for you.

“And I'm confident we will do it with a majority Labor Government.”

An emotional Ms Palaszczuk has paid tribute to Queenslanders who’ve done it tough during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on an historic night, on which Labor was swept back to power, the Premier said “there has never been a time like this in our lifetime”.

“It's been tough. There has been people that have, for example, in aged care that have not been able to go out and do their normal things and see their family.

“We've had people in hospitals who have been sick and haven't been able to see their friends and family as well. COVID has taken an incredible toll.

“But Queenslanders stood strong. We kept Queenslanders safe. And I want to thank Queenslanders for the work that you have done.

“I am humbled, deeply humbled that I am the Premier of this great state and that you’ve placed your faith in me for the next four years.”

Ms Palaszczuk finished her victory speech by thanking her family, saying “family is everything”.

“I know every single Queenslander out there agrees with me, there is nothing more important than family.

“And when times get tough, as they have in the past, it's your family that is there to support you in the good times and the bad.

“And, we stood strong, Queensland. We stood together. We stared down our critics. And we have come out of it all the better for it. So I thank Queensland.

“It is an amazing privilege and I promise you that I will roll up my sleeves tomorrow, get back to work, and continue to build a better Queensland. Thank you.”

More LNP upsets loom

Some more interesting results trickling in.

It’s still too early to call, but the LNP is on track for another upset on the Gold Coast, with Labor closing in on the Opposition in Coomera.

Michael Brandon, the incumbent, is only narrowly ahead on current count with 37.4 per cent of the primary compared to Chris Johnson for Labor on 36.8 per cent.

At present, that accounts for a significant 4.7 per cent increase in Labor’s vote.

Meanwhile, in the blue ribbon electorate of Moggill, the LNP’s Christian Rowan is only narrowly ahead.

Not much of a party...

This is the scene at the Liberal-National Party's election night function in Brisbane.

Understandably, the mood looks fairly sombre given the declared victory of Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor.

Party faithful are gathering at the ritzy Emporium Hotel in South Brisbane but it's unlikely to be much of a rager.

Meanwhile, over at Labor Party HQ – just down the road – the mood is far more excited.

Federal President Wayne Swan is fighting off selfie-hunting party goers with a stick.

Labor and Palaszczuk 'returned' to power

The Australian newspaper has called the Queensland election for Queensland and Annastacia Palaszczuk.

On current count, the newspaper declares the Premier is in a position to form a minority government with the Greens and is well on track to govern in its own right.

“If necessary, Ms Palaszczuk could now seek support from the Greens party to govern, which has a guaranteed two seats with the re-election of sitting MP Michael Berkman and the defeat of former deputy premier Jackie Trad at the hands of the Greens’ Amy MacMahon,” The Australian said.

“But on current indications, Labor is a strong chance to be returned in majority government, delivering Ms Palaszczuk a third term as Premier.”

The Courier-Mail has also declared the election for Labor and Ms Palaszczuk.

On current count, Sky News and The Courier-Mail have called 45 seats for Labor – just two short of the 47 it needs to win.

“Labor has painted the state red,” Sky News commentator Peter Gleeson said, summing up the ALP’s astonishing result.

Labor gains another LNP seat

Sky News and The Courier-Mail have called the seat of Pumicestone for Labor and candidate Ali King, snatching it away from the LNP Opposition.

Labor to retain Aspley

Sky News and The Courier-Mail have called the ultra-marginal Brisbane seat of Aspley for Labor and first term MP Bart Mellish.

Whitsunday called for LNP

The Liberal-National Party was won in the seat of Whitsunday, Sky News and The Courier-Mail project.

It marks a defeat for Jason Costigan, who defected from the party in scandal and formed North Queensland First.
