Fraser Anning: Senator hit by egg

WARNING: Graphic language

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has today called Queensland Senator Fraser Anning’s comments “a disgrace" after he released a statement victim-blaming Muslims over the New Zealand terror attack on Friday.

It comes as the 17-year-old teenage boy who egged Senator Anning yesterday over those same comments spoke about being set upon by members of Senator Anning’s team.

In a video tweeted by ABC News journalist Rashida Yosufzai, the teen offers advice to others: “Don’t egg politicians, you get tackled by 30 bogans at the same time, I learnt the hard way. F**k.”

In the video, the teen is pictured with black eyes and is seen cradling his face.

WILL ANNING BE PUNISHED?

There are calls for Senator Fraser Anning to be charged with assault after lashing out at the teenager in an ugly altercation at a speaking event in Melbourne yesterday.

Australian PM Scott Morrison has called for Fraser Anning to face the “full force of the law”.

If Senator Anning was charged and convicted (he has not been charged and there is no suggestion that if charged he would be convicted for assault) he would automatically be disqualified from parliament.

It is understood the government and Labor Party are drafting a censure motion against Senator Anning that will be presented when parliament resumes on April 1.

A change.org petition to have the controversial politician removed from parliament has so far gained more than 905,000 signatures.

LEADERS DENOUNCE ANNING

Asked about Senator Anning’s comments, NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was blunt: “They were a disgrace.”

New Zealand High Commissioner Annette King said her country rejected absolutely Senator Anning’s sentiment.

“We just condemn what he said and I’m absolutely delighted that his comments were condemned from the very top of government here in Australia and by the people of Australia,” she told reporters in Canberra.

Scott Morrison condemned Anning’s comments which blamed the Islamic community for the mosque shooting, saying they are “appalling and they’re ugly and they have no place in Australia”.

“I want to absolutely and completely denounce the statements made from Senator Anning in all of the comments that he has made in his conflation of this horrendous terror attack with issues on immigration and Islamic faith,” Mr Morrison said in a press conference on Saturday.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said extreme right-wing politicians could not disown their hatred, racism and intolerance.

“You who want to practice in the name of free speech hate speech, you who hide behind liberty to practice evil, well you have created this swamp of hate,” he told reporters in Melbourne. “You cannot disown what crawls out of your swamp.”

Mr Shorten also criticised the 17-year-old boy who egged Senator Anning, saying: “It doesn’t matter what rubbish the politician was spouting, you don’t want to give this foolish politician, this hurtful politician any sense of the moral high ground because he has none”.

ANNING’S RESPONSE

Senator Anning used his Facebook page to thank those who had supported him. He made several more anti-Islamic posts and complained about “the backlash of the establishment media and globalist politicians”.

THE EGGING

Senator Anning, who was roundly criticised for his comments on the Christchurch massacre he made on Friday, was egged at a right-wing rally where protesters and supporters of the controversial identity clashed in wild scenes.

Senator Anning was being interviewed by a Melbourne newspaper reporter at Moorabin when the 17 year-old boy from Hampton, an affluent suburb in Melbourne, broke a raw egg over the back of his head.

A shocked Senator Anning turned towards the teenager and slapped him in the face. He lashed out at the teen a second time as the pair were separated.

The teenager was tackled to the ground and held in a headlock by four supporters of Senator Anning, including convicted criminal Neil Erickson.

“You’re nothing but a weak, human f**king being,” one of the men holding down the teen can be heard.

The horrific footage shows a man holding the teen’s legs in the air dragging him across the floor while another bystander is seen kicking the boy in the back.

In the background someone can be heard pleading for the man to “get off his neck”.

NO CHARGES LAID YET

Following the altercation the teen was questioned by officials before being led away by police. He was later released without charge pending further investigations.

The senator has also escaped charges so far but questions are being asked into the conduct of the men who held the teen down, some describing it as “cruel” and saying he was “beaten up”.

A fundraising page has been created to collect donations to help cover the teenager’s legal fees and to buy “more eggs”.

A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $14,000 in 17 hours, smashing its original goal of $2000.

THE STATEMENT

In his comments on the parliamentary letterhead on Friday, Senator Anning lashed out at New Zealand for the way it handled immigration.

“I am utterly opposed to any form of violence within our community, and I totally condemn the actions of the gunman,” Senator Anning said in his statement.

“However, while this kind of violent vigilantism can never be justified, what it highlights is the growing fear within our community, both in Australia and New Zealand, of the increasing Muslim presence.

“As always, left-wing politicians and the media will rush to claim that the causes of today’s shootings lie with gun laws or those who hold nationalist views but this is all clichéd nonsense.

“The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”

Senator Anning went on to say that while Muslims may have been victims of attacks, he claimed they were also perpetrators. and blamed deaths on “the entire religion of Islam”.

“It is the religious equivalent of fascism,” he said.

He ended with a passage from the bible and said those who followed a violent religion that called on them to murder “cannot be too surprised when someone takes them at their word and responds in kind”.
