Latest Newspoll shows LNP will only narrowly win Queensland state election

The latest Newspoll has revealed a surprise for pundits who had tipped the Miles Labor government to be wiped out at Saturday’s Queensland state election.

The latest Newspoll taken just days before the Queensland state election shows LNP leader David Crusafulli has lost support, but would still score a narrow victory on Saturday.

In a shock result, the Newspoll shows the battle for government is on a knife-edge – upending expectations of a definitive win for the Liberal National Party after nine years in opposition.

The opposition leads Premier Steven Miles’s Labor government 52.5 to 47.5 per cent after preferences, the poll to be published in Friday’s The Australian reveals.

If that predicted 5.7 per cent swing were uniform across the state, the LNP would win 13 Labor seats and secure a two-seat majority in the 93-electorate parliament

The poll reveals Mr Crisafulli has lost the support of some voters during the four-week election campaign.

The Newspoll published in mid-­September showing the LNP led Labor, on a two-party – referred basis, by 55 to 45 per cent and that the opposition would have won a comfortable majority.

Mr Miles’ personal support has slightly improved, and he is ahead in preferred premier stakes, ­leading Mr Crisafulli 45-42 per cent, after trailing him 39-46 per cent in the previous Newspoll.

The poll of 1151 Queenslanders was conducted last Friday to Thursday, but at least 600,000 have voted already.
