A GOLD Coast man has been charged with poisoning his own baby after allegedly feeding an OxyContin tablet to a two-month-old girl.

The 22-year-old Carrara man faced Southport Magistrates Court briefly on Tuesday after being charged with administering poison with the intent to cause harm and possession of a controlled substance.

Police will allege the man gave the highly potent painkiller to the infant to ease her crying so he could have some “time out”.

Acting Detective Inspector Greg Aubort said the child’s parents eventually contacted Triple 0 and the baby girl was taken to hospital where she is now recovering in a stable condition.

“She is safe,” he said.

Blood tests at the Gold Coast University Hospital allegedly confirmed the presence of opiates in the baby’s system.

He said giving such powerful drugs to a baby was ‘grossly negligent’.

“Society does not accept this type of behaviour,” he said.

The investigation is ongoing.
