Paramedics rescue suspected shark attack victim on Great Barrier Reef

A man has been rescued from a remote island on the Great Barrier Reef after a horrifying shark attack.

A man in his 20s attacked by a shark off a remote island on the Great Barrier Reef is being flown to hospital.

A rescue helicopter was sent to Clack Island off Queensland’s far north coast after the man was reportedly bitten by a shark on the upper arm shortly after midday.

Shortly after 5.30pm local time, the Queensland Ambulance Service reported the man had been picked up by the helicopter crew and was being taken to Cairns Hospital.

“The patient was treated by the flight team and is currently being flown to Cairns Hospital stable with deep puncture wounds,” the ambulance service stated.

Access to the island, also known as Ngurromo, is restricted by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to “protect cultural resources”.

It is known for its rugged shore and escarpments.

Only Flinders Island People are allowed to freely enter onto the island, with anyone else wishing to visit requiring a permit or written approval.
