Woman critical after suspected carjacking in Queensland

Police were forced to close a highway after a woman sustained critical injuries in a suspected carjacking in Queensland.

A woman in her 50s has sustained critical injuries in a suspected carjacking in Queensland.

The woman was attacked outside Innisfail, in far north Queensland, on Friday at around 4.15pm, running to a nearby house for help.

She had been stabbed multiple times in the lower torso.

Police were called to the property in Mighell where they found the woman with life-threatening injuries.

“A short time later, a vehicle has crashed on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket and a man has fled into a nearby area,” a police spokesman said.

“Police have closed the highway in an attempt to locate the man.”

Police swarmed the area and a man was taken into custody on Friday night.

“A man is in custody... Residents are still urged to avoid the area, while investigations continue into what has occurred. The Highway remains closed. There is no further threat to public safety,” Queensland Police Service posted to social media just before 7pm.
