New restrictions come into force on Sunday banning visitors to aged-care homes in southeast Queensland due to the increased risk of coronavirus infection.

Visits to aged-care homes in southeast Queensland will be banned from midday on Sunday due to the increased risk of coronavirus infection.

The new restrictions apply to residential aged-care facilities in the municipalities of Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redland, Gold Coast and Scenic Rim.

Under the new measures only people providing an essential purpose will be allowed to enter, but end of life visits will still be allowed.

Anyone entering a facility must also wear a single use surgical face mask, while aged-care operators must make sure staff do not work across multiple facilities as much as possible.

The residents themselves cannot leave unless they are receiving health care, attending a funeral or for an emergency or for compassionate reasons.

It comes as Queensland health authorities fear a woman was unknowingly infected with coronavirus while working an eight-hour shift at a Brisbane nursing home.

All residents and staff at the Bolton Clarke aged care facility in Pinjarra Hills will be tested, with the facility now reportedly on high alert.

“We do think it was possible she was infectious when she worked her last shift at that facility so we are going to continue to have that facility in lockdown,” Queensland's chief health officer Jeannette Young said.

In Victoria, infections in aged-care homes has driven a second wave of coronavirus with more than 1000 active cases connected to outbreaks across aged-care facilities.

Dozens of aged-care residents have also died from COVID-19, while residents at several facilities have been moved to hospitals and hospital staff and specialist Australian Medical Assistance Teams have taken control of some facilities.
