Two men were killed in a light plane crash west of Cairns on Saturday morning during an alleged training exercise.

Two men were killed in a light plane crash west of Cairns on Saturday morning during an alleged training exercise.

Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched an investigation after the aircraft went down at Mareeba Airport about 11.15am on Saturday.

Queensland Police confirmed both men – the pilot, a 73-year-old man from Cooktown and his passenger, a 63-year-old man from Stuart, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Patrol Inspector Kevin Goan told media the pilot was going through a training exercise.

Witnesses on the ground claimed the plane’s engine was making unusual noises prior to the crash, according to Inspector Goan.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau released a statement confirming the aircraft was built by the Angel Aircraft Corporation.

It is registered to Anju Azul Aviation Pty Ltd, which has a registered address in Cooktown.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or heard the aircraft prior to the crash, to contact them on 131 444.
