Two people are dead and two are in hospital following a head-on crash on a Queensland highway.

Two people have died and another has been critically injured in a crash between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

The crash happened on the D’Aguilar Hwy at Wamuran in the Moreton Bay region about 3pm Sunday.

A woman in her 60s and a man in his 50s died at the scene.

The 26-year-old male driver of another vehicle which “crashed into” the other car, police say, has minor injuries and is being interviewed by police.

In a statement, police say the 26-year-old was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero westward on the highway.

The Pajero “crashed into a Ford Everest station wagon, travelling in the opposite direction”, a police spokesperson said.

A 57-year-old woman driving the Ford was taken to hospital on the Sunshine Coast by helicopter with life-threatening injuries.

The 68-year-old woman and 58-year-old man died at the scene.

The Pajero driver suffered minor injuries but was taken to hospital in Brisbane. Police say he is helping with the investigation.

Police also want anyone with footage or information to come forward.
