A sleeping man has been bitten by a crocodile in Far North Queensland.

The 65-year-old was snoozing on Newell Beach, north of Port Douglas, when the crocodile bit his foot on Tuesday night, the Department of Environment and Science said.

The man was under a blanket or inside a sleeping bag at the time.

He has since been released from hospital but is said to be walking with a limp.

“The chap was laying on the beach under a blanket or something when the lizard came and grabbed his legs,” Newell Beach Caravan Park manager Warren Farraway told the Townsville Bulletin.

“He was very lucky, there were other people on the beach who came to his aid and took him to the hospital.”

The Department of Environment and Science said people should avoid camping within 50 metres of the water’s edge.
