A child and two other people are fighting for life after a horrific crash involving a bus and car in rural Queensland.

The crash happened just before 3.30pm on Friday on the Warrego Highway, about 10km east of the town of Wallumbilla.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said there were 17 children on-board the bus, and one suffered multiple serious fractures that were considered critical.

The other 16 children were in a stable condition, having suffered injuries “ranging from cuts, abrasions, lacerations (and) fractures”.

The bus driver was also in a stable condition with minor injuries.

Two people were trapped in the other vehicle for some time before they could be freed.

They are in a critical condition at Roma Hospital.

QAS said “aero-medical assistance” was being arranged. Twenty people were treated at the scene and 19 patients were taken to the hospital.
