Queensland hero: Father dies and new mum fights for life after horrific caravan inferno
A mother has given birth to a healthy baby boy after being caught in an inferno which killed her heroic partner in Queensland.
A father to be has been labelled a “hero” after he shielded his heavily pregnant partner from a blazing caravan fire in Queensland.
Blake Whell, 22, died in hospital around noon on Tuesday, after the caravan he was living in with his partner, Tomeka Willis, 20, caught alight at around 11pm on Monday night.
The new mum, who at the time was 35 weeks pregnant, delivered a healthy baby boy via caesarean on Tuesday afternoon.
Ms Willis remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Police are looking into whether a charging electric scooter sparked the blaze.
Mr Whell’s father made an emotional plea to the community as he hailed his son a hero in the wake of his death.
The father of the now deceased man, Mr Whell, told reporters his son was a “hero”.
“My boy – he’s a hero. He threw himself over the top of her to save her and took most of the burns.” he said.
The emotional father told reporters his son suffered burns to around 95 per cent of his body.
“I’ve lost my boy and I may lose my daughter-in-law, who’s pregnant,” he said.
“I’ve just lost my son … Beware of these scooters, they’re dangerous, Please, I beg you. It’s all I have to say, be careful of these e-scooters.”
Queensland Ambulance Service medical director Steven Rashford said paramedics arrived at the Wilbur St address around 11pm to find the pair with significant injuries.
“Two patients in their 20s required significant resuscitation,” Dr Rashford said.
The pair were transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital suffering severe burn wounds.
A crime scene has been established and investigations are ongoing.
A local community support page has stepped up to raise funds for the man’s funeral, after his family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support.
Neighbour Dennis Birt told reporters he woke up to a cry for help just after 11pm on Monday night.
“By the time I went to my back door I could feel the heat from their caravan which was on fire,” he said.
Mr Birt said the “clearly pregnant” woman ran across the road screaming to alert neighbours of the incident.
“By that stage she was basically naked and just wearing her underwear, she was clearly pregnant.”
Mr Birt said his main concern was the pair’s health and wellbeing.
