A man has provided a bizarre explanation for breaking into a family home and using their pool after a sweaty jog in Brisbane’s north.

Homeowner Holly Stevens witnessed the unknown man repeatedly sneak into the home in New Farm at least four times since January 19.

The man was filmed on CCTV camera taking off his shoes and socks at the front door before taking a plunge into the pool. He stretched his muscles and completed a few laps before leaving.

Now the man, Matt, has come forward and explained he was not aware anyone was living at the home during the swimming expeditions.

“To me, it looked like a display home,” he told 7News.

“I didn’t think anyone lived there, so I just decided I was hot and thought I’d go for a swim.”

Matt quickly realised his error when the story was shared and turned himself in to police.

“They just gave me a caution and told me not to do it again,” he said.

Matt said he lost sleep over the incident, deleted his social media and temporarily left Brisbane until the heat settled.

However, his cousins and friends have since started rinsing him for the sneaky swims.

“My cousins have been calling up and asking if I want to go for a swim at theirs,” he said.

Despite reaching out to the Stevens family to apologise for trespassing, he is yet to hear back.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told NewsWire they had received a formal report of an “an unknown man entering a ... backyard and swimming in the property’s pool on several occasions”.

They said the man had since been dealt with by way of an adult caution.

“A 34-year-old Geebung man attended Fortitude Valley Police Station on Wednesday, April 30 and was cautioned for one count of trespass,” they said.
