A man has died and a woman is fighting for life after the pair were flung from their jet ski when it crashed into mangroves.

A man has died and a woman is fighting for life after a jet ski crashed into mangroves in Far North Queensland.

Queensland Police’s Forensic Crash Unit has been called in to investigate the fatal marine incident in Cairns, with initial information suggesting the pair were travelling along the Barron River on Friday when the accident occurred.

The man, 56, and the woman, 60, were flung from their vehicle after it struck mangroves just north of the Barron River Boat Ramp at around 10:30am.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics treated the man for life threatening injuries to the head and chest but was ultimately declared dead on the scene.

His companion received critical injuries to her shoulder and chest and was rushed to Cairns Hospital, where she is now in a stable condition.

Police have since established an investigation and will begin preparing a report for the coroner.

The boat ramp remains closed while investigations proceed, with locals urged by police to avoid the area.
