Grim ‘breakthrough’ in search for missing mum-of-three Tayla Spies
There has been a grim discovery near the vehicle of a missing mother of three who has not been seen for more than two months.
Human remains have been located near the vehicle of missing mum Tayla Spies, who has not been seen for more than two months.
Police made the grisly find about 1km from Ms Spies’ vehicle, which was found on a private property on April 3.
“Although we cannot confirm, at this stage, that those remains are those of Tayla, we suspect they may be,” Detective Chief Inspector Garry Watts said on Friday.
“A complete forensic examination will need to be conducted to verify that.”
The 29-year-old woman was reported missing on February 2 after failing to return home from a weekend trip with her partner in Dalby in Queensland’s Western Downs.
She was last seen filling her 2017 white Toyota HiLux at a petrol station on Wamo St in Condamine the same day before getting into the ute and turning west.
Queensland Police began a 9000 square kilometre search that included the towns of Yuleba, Wallumbilla South, east to Roma, south to Teelba past Surat and west to Glenmorgan and Meandarra.
On Friday, Inspector Watts said there had been a “breakthrough in the investigation”
The day before, on April 3 about 3pm, police were called to a private propertyon Yuleba-Surat Rd, in Noorindoo, about 40km from Surat, after a reported sighting of Ms Spies’ white HiLux.
The car was located about 2km into the property, which backs onto the “heavily wooded” Yuleba State Forest.
“Detectives have confirmed the vehicle to be Tayla’s after locating property in the vehicle belonging to the missing person,” Queensland Police said.
The car was found locked and is yet to be examined, but police confirmed “an amount of property that belongs to Ms Spies” was inside, including the bag and hot pink shirt she wore on the day of her disappearance.
While Inspector Watts said the car had yet to be investigated by crime experts, he said there was no suggestion she had been living inside the vehicle.
Police conducted a brief search the area but failed to locate Ms Spies after conditions became too dark to see.
The search recommenced on Friday morning and is set to continue.
“Now we’ve got a location of her motor vehicle, we can hone our recourses into that area and conduct a more full and thorough foot search,” Inspector Watts said.
Ms Spies has been described as caucasian, with brown shoulder-length hair, blue eyes, a slim build and about 170cm tall.
She has the word “Karma” tattooed on her chest.
Anyone with information about Ms Spies’ whereabouts is urged to immediately contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
