A kitten was discovered by RSPCA staff in Brisbane wrapped in duct tape with a used fire cracker strapped to its body and burn marks to its neck and mouth.
The animal welfare charity said it was a “disturbing level of cruelty” that had left staff at a loss for words.
The ginger kitten was found on July 27 dumped in a bin outside a home in Park Ridge in Brisbane’s south.
RSPCA Queensland said the kitten had duct tape wrapped around its neck, legs and torso.
When the tape was removed, veterinarians found the remnants of fire crackers and burn injuries to the kitten’s body.
“Quite frankly I’m at a loss for words,” RSPCA Queensland Chief Inspector Daniel Young said.
“How anyone could treat an animal like this and then discard it like rubbish is appalling.
“This level of offending shows a complete lack of empathy and a very disturbing level of cruelty.”
The organisation said its inspectors went with police to a property in Crestmead, close to Park Ridge, where a man in his twenties was residing.
“The RSPCA seized a number of items including a piece of used duct tape with cat fur matching the description of the kitten located in the bin,” the charity said in a social media post.
“A mobile device was also seized which contained a video of a person lighting firecrackers which were taped to the kitten.”
The RSPCA said the investigation was ongoing and anyone with information about the incident or who received a video of the cat should get in touch.
