Queensland Police are mourning the loss of PD Pezz, a “vibrant and energetic boy” who loved to work and was dearly loved.

Firearms and explosives detection dog PD Pezz passed away peacefully in the arms of his handler last Sunday, after more than seven years of dedicated service to the Queensland community.

PD Pezz was born on July 2, 2010, at the QPS Dog Squad complex. In 2013, he attended the firearms and explosives detection course where he was inducted into the Queensland Police Service as a detection dog, connected to the Explosives Ordnance Response Team.

He then met his handler and “lifelong friend” Senior Constable Jess Dwyer.

In a statement, QPS said PD Pezz’s life was action packed.

“During his career, PD Pezz and Senior Constable Dwyer worked together to complete searches for dignitaries visiting Queensland, locate firearms during search warrants, and perform duties during the 2014 G20 and the Commonwealth Games in 2018,” the statement read.

“PD Pezz flew in the rescue helicopter, rode in the QPS dingy and travelled all across Queensland.

“PD Pezz will always be remembered as a vibrant and energetic boy who loved to work and was loved dearly by his handler and her family.

“He left an impression wherever he went, with people commenting even at 10-years-old that he had the energy and charisma of a puppy.”

PD Pezz became unwell with an “unforeseen illness” and with “great sorrow”, the decision was made on Sunday, August 16 to lay him to rest.

“PD Pezz passed away peacefully in the arms of Senior Constable Dwyer and her family after more than seven years of dedicated service to the Queensland community,” QPS said.

“Rest In Peace PD Pezz and thank you for your honourable service.”
