Brisbane lord mayor says shifting to daylight savings is ‘inevitable’
A prominent politician has thrown his weight behind a debate as old as time, demanding Queenslanders be given the final say.
The daylight savings debate has been reignited in Queensland, just one day after those south of the border wound their clocks forward.
Brisbane City Council lord mayor Adrian Schrinner has doubled down on comments he made in an opinion piece on the weekend.
“Sooner or later it will happen,” he told 4BC radio on Monday.
“I think it’s inevitable.”
Mr Schrinner, who has been a long-time advocate of daylight savings, said it was time for Queenslanders to be given a say.
“More and more people, particularly those who have moved from interstate, they’ve lived with it and they think it’s fantastic,” he said.
“When you saw the results of the referendum last time, southeast (Queensland) voted 60 per cent yes to keeping daylight savings.
“If people got the opportunity to have a say, I think it’s inevitable that it would get up.”
Queenslanders were given the opportunity to have their say on the issue back in February 1992.
While those in the southeast were in favour of moving the clocks forward, the question was defeated with 54.5 per cent of residents voting no.
