A three-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a car at a popular showground.

A three-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car at the Rockhampton Showgrounds in Central Queensland.

Emergency services were called to the vehicle and pedestrian accident on Exhibition Rd and the New England Highway in Wandal about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene but he died shortly after they arrived.

A woman in her 40s was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the Forensic Crash Unit was leading the investigating following the fatal traffic incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

His death comes a week before the Rocky Show at the showgrounds on June 12.
