New theory on why Chinese man poured hot coffee on baby

A popular vlogger who lived in China for fourteen years has shared a theory on why a Chinese man allegedly poured hot coffee on a nine-month-old baby in Brisbane.

Will Sterzel, who goes by Serpentza on YouTube where he has 1.6 million subscribers, is a prominent critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

He said random attacks on children are so common in China that there is a name for them that translates to “revenge against society”.

Mr Sterzel lived in China for 14 years, but left when he said it became clear the CCP was not a fan of his videos on daily life in China.

The suspect, who police have not named, fled back to China after allegedly pouring hot coffee on baby Luka, who was with his mum in a Brisbane park on August 27.

“When his latest application for a visa was rejected, he did what so many in China do … lashed out and took revenge on society by attacking a child,” Mr Sterzel said in a YouTube video.

“He even said to his friend that he wanted to take revenge on white people.”

Mr Sterzel said the attacks on children represent the tyranny of living under the CCP.

“What it boils down to at the root of it all is injustice,” Mr Sterzel continued.

“When you’re down on your luck the government will not help you in China, there are no social programs and if your family isn’t willing to float you, you’re done for.

“There simply are no mental health facilities or systems in place to deal with mental health.

“So, when people snap and are at their wit’s end they have no recourse, they’re not allowed to blame the government, they cannot strike or protest or petition or act.

“They have nowhere to turn and so they selfishly lash out at society trying to inflict as much damage as possible and in China children are the most precious and important part of society.”

Mr Sterzel reminded his viewers the revenge attacks were not a cultural tradition, but a reaction that stems from modern life in China that is bleak for some.

“This is a problem that’s continuing to grow in China and unfortunately gets exported abroad,’” Mr Sterzel said.

A GoFundMe was quickly set up for baby Luka’s medical bills, with the campaign reaching over $200,000.

Luka suffered severe burns to his chest, neck and face.

Luka’s parents provided an update on his condition on September 26 on the fundraiser page, revealing he had just had his first bath back at home.

“Safe to say he had the time of his life,” his mum wrote.

“It’s a long road to recovery when it comes to scar management but the worst of it is over, and the outcome is far better than we ever imagined from those first initial few days.

“We now only have to attend outpatients once a week, big improvement from the twice a week general anaesthetic surgery.”

His mother had previously written about how she hoped “one day justice will be served”.

“This horrific event should have never happened,” she said.
