Monster 8kg python found in Upper Brookfield as warmer winter weather sparks increased snake activity across Brisbane

A mammoth python weighing in at almost 8kg is the biggest catch of the year for a Brisbane snake catcher whose business has not slowed during the winter months.

The python was found in the gutter of an Upper Brookfield home.

Lucas’ Reptile Rescue owner, Lucas Perrett, said this year’s warm weather has sparked a flurry of activity among snakes, particularly carpet pythons, tree snakes and eastern browns.

“I relocated my biggest snake of the year in Upper Brookfield (this month), a 7.85kg coastal carpet python,” he said.

“She was a beauty.

“It makes me so happy to find big healthy animals like this. Means our local ecosystems are thriving.”

Mr Perrett said the best thing to do when you spot a snake in your house is to just leave it alone.

“Most snakes will just move on by themselves especially pythons, snakes have roughly a two metre range of vision so just stand still and let it pass,” he said.

“They will be napping during the day in warm places such as on the roof and then will hunt at night and move along. Just leave it alone.”

Mr Perrett said business had been non-stop this year.

“Usually I’ll get about a six week break when it cools down and get one or two calls a week. But this year it hasn’t been like that at all, I’m still getting multiple calls a day.”

This year in the Brisbane region, the mean daily maximum temperature was 27.4C in comparison to last year which sat at a cooler 25.4C

“There were three or four days at the start of May which cooled down and so some snakes would have gone into brumation,” Mr Perrett said.

“Then it completely worked up again so the snakes got confused.”

Over the weekend, the Division 1 mens hockey game in Morningside was paused when a small carpet python slithered onto the field.

Luckily, local umpire Adrian Cross came to the rescue, transporting the python to the other side of the playing centre.

“With no takers from the crowd or the players to escort the python to the far side woods, it was up to the Brisbane Umpires to take control yet again,” Terry Disteldorf in a post to Brisbane Hockey said.

“Adrian Cross was the Man’s Man for 5 minutes as he expertly (only 2 drops!) manually transported the python to the other side of Field 2, near the woods.”
