A MAN is dead after being run over by a senior officer outside a Queensland police station.

Assistant Police Commissioner of the Northern Region Paul Taylor is the subject of an ethical standards investigation after running over the man on the down-ramp to a carpark at the Sheridan St police complex in Cairns this morning.

An investigation is under way into whether the man may have already been dead and lying in a driveway when he was hit.

The accident happened about 4.20am, and left the man trapped under the car.

Paramedics, who had trouble reaching him to check his vital signs, declared him dead at the scene.

A local policeman described the incident as “very tragic”.

The man’s age hasn’t been released.

A press conference has been called for later this morning.
