Little Mason’s death suspicious

IT was just a “normal night” at home until toddler Mason wouldn’t wake up. His mum’s partner called 000 - and what the ambos saw when they got there had them drop to the gutter “sobbing”.

POLICE and paramedics broke down and cried after finding a 21-month-old boy dead at a Caboolture South home, witnesses say.

A neighbour said the discovery of the boy, Mason, early on Saturday morning left four of the emergency service workers distraught.

Neighbours saw one worker sitting in the gutter outside the house sobbing.

The 35-year-old man questioned by police for 18 hours in relation to the death, told Channel 9 he had tried everything to save Mason when he found him blue and gasping for air in his bed.

William O’Sullivan, Mason’s mother’s partner, told Channel 9 the evening had been a “normal night” until the toddler became unresponsive and a friend dialled Triple-0.

Paramedics arrived at the house soon after midnight to find Mason was already dead.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the chief paramedic on the scene immediately called for counsellors to help those attending the incident.

“Two police and two ambos did their jobs and then they all just dropped to the gutter. There were ambos sobbing,” the neighbour said.

“They had to be taken away. They couldn’t deal with what they had seen.”

Police are treating Mason's death as suspicious. They said he had “some injuries”.

The neighbour said Mason’s pregnant mother was emotional and screaming when police arrived.

There were other people inside the house at the time of the incident.

The neighbour said a man who was leaving the house when the ambulances arrived told him he had tried to save the baby.

“As I went to go see what had happened I saw a man and I said, ‘what’s going on here?’ and he said, ‘I couldn’t get air into it. The baby was solid’.”

Mason’s mother, Anne, told Channel 7 the toddler was a “beautiful boy”.

The house remained cordoned off yesterday as police continued to investigate the cause of Mason’s death.
