Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital staff parking plan only an interim solution, says AMA
THE plan to push 200 staff from Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital into off-site parking to free up parks for patients has been labelled a Band-Aid solution by the AMA.
THE plan to push 200 staff from Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital into off-site parking to ease patient parking dramas has been labelled a Band-Aid solution by the Australian Medical Association of Queensland.
The Courier-Mail on Wednesday approached Queensland Health about the frustrations of parents with sick children who were left with nowhere to park when trying to make urgent specialist appointments. Later in the day, it was announced Mater Health Services, which runs the Mater Hospitals and Cilento carparks, had made a deal with South Bank Parklands to offer 200 spaces to staff.
The three carparks in the precinct have 3763 car parks, so 200 is about 5 per cent of the spaces. Staff are not obligated to take up the offer of paying $35 per week for the South Bank spaces. The offer is aimed at daytime workers.
FRUSTRATED: Hospital plagued by parking problems
Australian Medical Association Queensland president Dr Shaun Rudd said it was not a long-term solution.
“It’s no more than an interim move and the hospital must look at bigger picture to try to come to some resolution for patients and staff,” he said.
A decade ago, doctors flagged that the South Brisbane site was not suitable for then premier Peter Beattie’s superhospital due to poor access and parking.
Dr Rudd said regional patients could travel for hundreds of kilometres for care at LCCH and it was unacceptable if they couldn’t gain access on arrival.
Mater Health Services is confident that by emptying 200 spaces, parking pressure will be eased.
Children’s Health Queensland chief executive Fionnagh Dougan said improving parking availability for patients and families was a priority.
