Joint Cyber Security Centre opens in Brisbane

BRISBANE is at the forefront of the nation’s cyber security efforts with the opening of a new multimillion-dollar centre.

THE first stage of the Federal Government’s $47 million cyber security plan has been unveiled in Brisbane.

The Joint Cyber Security Centre in the city’s CBD allows law-enforcement agencies, government and industry to collaborate and share information to counter cyber attacks.

Similar centres are set to be launched in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Speaking at the unveiling, Attorney-General George Brandis said today a strong cyber security approach was critical, not just for national security, but the economy as well.

“It is more important than ever that government and business work together,” he said.

Cybercrime is believed to cost the Australian economy more than $1 billion a year, though Senator Brandis said it could be as high as $17 billion.

The Brisbane centre includes federal and state government agencies, law enforcement, and industry representatives.

Agents are tasked with sifting through data, threat mapping, and analytics.
