A runner who suffered a medical episode on the Gold Coast marathon course has reportedly died after being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Emergency services rushed to the popular race circuit about 9.45am on Sunday after reports two male runners had suffered a “medical incident”.

The pair – who are believed to be in their 20s and 50s – were rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital and placed in intensive care.

The Courier Mail reported one of the two men – believed to be a French national – had died in hospital on Monday, having collapsed within metres of the finish line.

The Queensland paper reported that the other runner also remained in a critical condition.

In a statement, Events Management Queensland thanked the on-course medical team for the “swift provision of critical care”.

“Our thoughts are with the participants and their families,” the statement added.

The popular Gold Coast Marathon runs between July 1-2 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year owing to its “flat, fast, and scenic course”.
