Woman’s body found in burned caravan in Darra, Brisbane

POLICE are treating a Brisbane woman’s death as suspicious after her body was found in a badly burnt caravan.

A WOMAN’S body has been found in a burnt-out caravan after a fire southwest of Brisbane, and police are treating the death as suspicious.

The caravan at the rear of a paint and panel yard on Gravel Pit Rd, Darra, was engulfed in flames just before 6am on Sunday. The body of a woman believed to be in her early 30s was found inside and police are questioning a 61-year-old man.

Investigators have established a crime scene at the site.

It’s been reported the woman, who had only been in Brisbane a few days, was a guest of the panel shop owner and wasn’t trespassing.

Regional crime co-ordinator Geoff Sheldon told the ABC it was not known if the fire was deliberately lit.

“We’re treating it as suspicious at this stage by having our fire examiners, scientific officers, and forensic people thoroughly examine the scene and until we can get to the root cause of what has happened.”

He said the woman had been out socialising at a festival in Inala last night before returning to the caravan.

A man, believed to be the owner of the business, had also stayed in the caravan overnight, reported Brisbane’s Courier-Mail.

“The business owner has had to leave early in the morning. He has then been contacted by neighbours saying that his premises was on fire, come back and we have made the grisly discovery,” Acting Detective Superintendent Sheldon said.

An autopsy would confirm how she died.
