Thief comes up with bizarre method to break into vehicles

Police have been taken aback by the unusual lengths a car thief has gone to in order to break into a vehicle.

A thief has broken into vehicles in a unit block like they were opening a can of baked beans.

The vehicle owners were gobsmacked to see the manner in which the thief broke into their cars overnight on Wednesday to steal the most trivial items.

Angelo Cureg, who owned one of the vehicles broken into, told NCA/NewsWire that two of the six vehicles parked in the unit block at Nundah, on Brisbane’s northside, were hit.

“They peeled the whole thing off,” he said

“They took my partner’s empty wallet and our baby bag full of nappies and wipes.”

He was unsure whether it would be worth claiming the damage on insurance given the excess may be more than the repair bill.

“I'm not too sure what would be the insurance process for something like this,” he said.

RACQ Insurance said it was not something their insurance assessors saw often, and where possible, motorists should park their cars in locked garages.

Unfortunately, for this driver, that did not appear possible, said RACQ representative Lucinda Ross.

"Drivers can do a few simple things to reduce the risk of their car being broken into or damaged by thieves,“ Ms Ross said.

“Keep your car securely garaged and locked, with the keys out of sight.

“If you can't keep it garaged, make sure to not leave any valuables in your car to reduce the temptation for thieves.”

Police said the break-in was unusual and the window, instead of shattering, was probably held together by the layer of tinting over the glass and then pulled aside.
