A teenager has been charged with murdering a 16-year-old during a fight understood to be over a mutual relationship, police have alleged.

Balin Stewart allegedly suffered the life-threatening injury during a fight with another boy outside a Buddina home on Thursday night.

Officers were called at 11.20pm to the house but Stewart could not be revived.

The other teenager, 17, has now been charged with his murder.

Following a brief court appearance on Friday, he was remanded in custody to reappear in March.

Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Hurst told reporters the teenager was taken into custody at the scene.

He confirmed the pair were known to each other and initial investigations suggested the altercation started due to a “interpersonal dispute” around relationships.

“When knives are carried by young people, they are used at times and they have these tragic outcomes,” Detective Senior Sergeant Hurst told ABC News.

“This is tragic for the family, for the people who responded and for everyone involved.”

Authorities are urging anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time or who may have CCTV footage of the area to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

“We do know that a lot of the members of the public came out and were in the vicinity” Mr Hurst said.

“Some of them may have heard something earlier than they‘ve seen something.”
