Sad update on baby burnt with coffee in random attack at Brisbane park
The three-year-old sister of a baby boy who suffered horror burns after a stranger poured coffee on him had a heartbreaking reaction to the tragedy.
A three-year-old girl whose baby brother was doused in hot coffee by a stranger had a gut-wrenching reaction to the tragedy, their father has revealed.
Nine-month-old Luka was at Stones Corner park with his mother in Brisbane on Tuesday when the harrowing attack happened.
He suffered serious burns and will undergo further surgery today, with the family waiting to learn if the toddler will need skin grafts.
The father was at Chermside with their young daughter when he got a call from his partner over loud speaker in his car, meaning the young girl heard the drama unfold over the phone.
“She heard everything, I heard everything. It was all very frantic,” he told The Project on Thursday night.
“She’s an incredibly smart girl, so she’s very aware of everything.”
The father revealed his daughter said “I hope the bad guy doesn’t hurt me” after seeing her brother in the emergency room.
“I haven’t been able to see her since the emergency room because I’ve not left the hospital yet but, yeah, I imagine it’s pretty traumatic for her,” he added.
He said his partner no longer feels safe in public after the horror incident
“She’s probably going to take a while to be able to go in public,” he told The Courier Mail.
“He has another surgery on Friday, so we’re not going to know the full extent of the severe (burns) until then.
“His chin, all down his neck, the bottom of his cheek and his chest and back, are deeper burns, so they’re more severe.”
The boy’s dad said he had been sick before the incident.
“And then he finally got better a few days before the incident. And then that’s when his mum organised to see her friends and their babies in the park so (he) could see his friends,” he said.
Speaking on The Project the mother said: “I’m not sure how I’m going to feel safe leaving my house with my son in the future and I know that that’s going to be a long road for me.
“I’m just so grateful for all the community support and my friends and family have rallied us ... and my partner is fantastic, as well, so having all of that support around me, I know we’ll get through it together.”
It has now been revealed the alleged attacker went to a nearby church in Tarragindi after the incident, where he changed his clothes.
He then caught a rideshare to the Brisbane CBD, and travelled to Caxton Street.
He was wearing a black hat, glasses, a checkered button-up shirt and shorts.
Video of the man fleeing the scene was caught on nearby CCTV and released by police.
Anyone who recognises the man is urged to contact police or Crimestoppers.
A Go Fund Me page has been launched to help cover the baby’s medical costs.
“If you can help in any way by either donating or sharing. Would love to raise some money towards any medical or household costs to help ease the pressure off my friend and her family while they take the time to be home and help their beautiful boy heal,” the fundraiser read.
