Police shoot weapon-wielding man dead on Queensland island
A man in his 30s has died after he was shot multiple times by police during a confrontation in Queensland’s southeast on Sunday morning.
An allegedly weapon-wielding man has died after he was shot during a confrontation with police in southeast Queensland.
The man, in his 30s, was shot multiple times after Queensland Police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance and the sound of breaking glass on Russell Island.
Superintendent Andrew Pilotto said the officers did not have time to deploy their tasers because they were confronted as they got out of their vehicle at the house on Ranora Ave about 9.15am on Sunday.
Police said the man, who was allegedly armed with a bladed weapon which 7News reports was a machete, ran at the two officers, who are receiving counselling and are said to be traumatised.
The man was treated for critical injuries but he later died.
“We’d never seen him outside his house,” a neighbour told 7News.
“He’s kept to himself. I don’t think anyone really knew him.”
The shooting will be investigated by the Queensland Police Ethical Standards Command, and the Crime and Corruption Commission.
“It happened quickly and there was very little time from the arrivals in terms of negotiation,” Supt Pilotto said.
“The investigation will look at that.”
Additional officers from the mainland will help with the investigation into the use of lethal force.
“We’ve had to bring from the mainland all our investigative resources,” Supt Pilotto said.
“It’s a small station here on the island, so we have to bring everything in.
“There’s some logistical challenges to that, but we’re fortunate in being well resourced to do that.
“The islands receive very good policing services from the police who live and work here.”
