Qld police dog helps capture man who sent Ormeau State School into lockdown
A man who allegedly sparked a school lockdown and made a chilling Facebook threat is now in police custody after a major manhunt.
A Gold Coast man who sparked a school lockdown on Tuesday and allegedly took to Facebook to make a chilling threat, has been captured after being bitten by a police dog.
Mark Lutgenau, 37, was arrested in a reserve at Nerang, a suburb on the Gold Coast, just after 4pm, police said.
It comes after an alleged domestic violence incident at Upper Coomera on Monday and subsequent emergency declaration at Ormeau on Tuesday.
Acting Inspector Kevin Gant said Mr Lutgenau sustained a wound after being bitten by the police dog while being captured on Wednesday evening.
“Specialist officers in the area located and had taken the male into custody.
“The 37-year-old man did sustain minor dog bite. He is being treated for his injuries.
“He (the dog) was involved in the arrest.”
Inspector Gant said the man had yet to be charged although they are “pending” and they did locate a number of items but would not disclose what police had seized.
“A search was conducted at the time and there were some items found but I can’t (reveal them) at this stage,” he said.
“Charges are pending and the investigation is continuing into the incidents that occured over the last couple of days.”
Officers were now focussing on the safety of the woman at the centre of the alleged domestic violence incident.
“It is paramount for her safety to ensure she is also getting help and it continues into the future,” Inspector Gant said.
The arrest comes after officers were called to an alleged domestic violence incident at Upper Coomera on Monday night.
After Lutgenau left the scene, officers began searching for him, saying they believed he could be armed.
As police continued their search on Tuesday, an emergency situation was declared at Ormeau, sending the state primary school into lockdown.
It was revoked later in the afternoon after officers failed to find Mr Lutgenau.
Despite a public plea from police to hand himself in, Mr Lutgenau allegedly commented on Facebook that he would only do so if he was “allowed” to see his children.
In another post, he said: “I have got nothing left in my life and (there) will be a shootout with police.”
Police suggested on Tuesday the 37-year-old “may be armed with a firearm” but said there was no known specific threat against members of the community.
He commented on Queensland Police Service’s Facebook alert about himself on Tuesday night, writing it had been a “stress (sic) time for all involved”.
