Qld home where alleged four-hour torture of teen took place goes up in blaze

Police have revealed what led up to the burning down of the home of a young girl charged with repeatedly assaulting another teen.

The home of an alleged teen torturer has burned to the ground, days after a video was shared online of the horrifying ordeal.

Police were called to the Tewantin home where it is alleged a group of teenage girls tortured another girl for four hours following reports the home had gone up in flames.

The 13-year-old teenage girl was allegedly tied up, cut, burned and hit with bottles while at a sleepover on March 11.

About 1.30am, emergency services rushed to the home that police say was “engulfed in flames”.

No one was inside the housing department home at the time of the blaze and no injuries have been reported.

Police are examining the home that was “completely destroyed” by the fire, according to Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield.

“We’ll investigate (the arson) heavily and seriously, we just don’t want a continuation of this type of behaviour,” he said.

“Those people who do commit these kinds of acts will be prosecuted if we do identify who they are.”

Sergeant Mansfield confirmed that police had been “doing regular patrols in the street since the first incident occurred” but weren’t at the scene at the time the fire started.

“It’s been a constant patrol objective for our patrol group...we’ve been in the air as well but we’ve also been responding to other calls, so unfortunately we’re in the business where we can’t be everywhere at once,” he said.

There is no suggestion of involvement or wrongdoing by the family of the alleged torturers or the alleged victim.

Police were made aware of a “racially motivated flyer” that was distributed around Tewantin and other areas of South East Queensland before the arson that officers believe is linked to an “interstate organisation”, according to District Superintendent Craig Hawkins.

“This is a direct attempt by individuals that don’t live on the Sunshine Coast, have no relationship to the Sunshine Coast, to incite radical behaviour and racially motivated behaviour,” he said.

“The cultural heritage of the people who did occupy this home is completely irrelevant.

“A matter has occurred, police have investigated that matter and these individuals are now before the court for justice to be delivered.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has dashcam or CCTV from the surrounding area, is urged to contact police.

Investigations are continuing.
