A man is still on the loose after the shooting of a woman that resulted in a Queensland island being under emergency lockdown.

Police say they know the identity of the wanted man who knew the victim who was dropped off at a family member’s house to receive medical treatment.

A 27-year-old-man was located at an address on Sylvan Beach Esplanade at 3.45pm and was taken into police custody.

The man still being sought is described as Caucasian, about 177cm tall, proportionate build and has no hair and blue eyes.

Police are urging anyone who sights the man or has any information regarding his current whereabouts to not approach him and to immediately call Triple Zero (000). All three are known to each other.

Inspector Bob Hytch said earlier the men were in a heated argument when the shot was fired and the woman was then taken to a residence in Rothwell.

He said one man was tracked to Bribie Island, north east of Brisbane, where, despite police locking down streets and conducting an extensive search, he initially slipped through their net.

“The search is still underway but it would appear that person has slipped through the cordon and that person has an association with Bribie Island,” Insp Hytch said.

The firearm allegedly used in the shooting has been recovered and it’s quite probable that the incident was an “accident”, Insp Hytch said.

Insp Hytch said the incident was not gang related and one of the men was known to police in regards to property matters.

The drama started when paramedics were called to a residence in Kelliher St, Rothwell, about 7.45am where the woman had been “shot in the back”. She was taken to hospital in a serious condition, a Queensland Ambulance Service representative said.

Police then tracked a vehicle of interest to Bribie Island, about 20km northeast of Rothwell, where the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared at 10.45am. The PSPA was revoked at 2.05pm.

Specialist police were on scene and members of the community were asked to avoid the area. Local roads had been blocked.

Insp Hytch said the woman would undergo surgery on Thursday afternoon and, while she was in a serious condition, she was expected to survive.
